Teaching Sentence Types with The Pigeon Books

There are a couple of different reasons to focus on types of sentences. One of them is from a grammar perspective: we have different types of sentences, and we can recognize them by the punctuation marks on them. Another reason is from a reading fluency perspective: an author includes a variety of sentences in a text to create interest in the way we read it. If an author included an exclamatory sentence, something exciting is going on. The voice you use in your head (or out loud) should sound more excited. This helps our comprehension, because we’re reading the text the way the author intended.
