What to Read in February

February is such a great month in the classroom. There are so many things to celebrate! Today, I’m sharing with you a few of my favorite read alouds for the month, along with a great FREE lesson idea.

Black History

Of course black history should be taught and celebrated alongside every other piece of history throughout the year, but because of Frederick Douglass’s and Abraham Lincoln’s birthdays landing in February, this is a month designated to making a special effort to bringing our students’ attention to Black voices!

President’s Day

Right in the middle of February, we celebrate President’s Day! Looking at Lincoln and Dear Mr. Washington are (in my opinion) the best kid read alouds on these two, great men. Both are so engaging!

Valentine’s Day

And, of course, you can’t talk about February read alouds without talking about Valentine’s Day! In the classroom, I choose to emphasize friendship a little more than love. We talk about loving our families and loving our friends in a friendly way. But things can get a little dicey if you let them get romantic (especially in upper elementary!) So below, I have a few read alouds that focus on friendship as well as a couple that talk about Valentine’s Day directly!

And, as a little bonus, I have a blog HERE all about my absolute favorite Valentine’s Day reading lesson. It requires very little prep, but a few graphic organizers don’t hurt. You can get my graphic organizers to go along with Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch by joining my freebie library below! And, be sure to check out THIS POST to read about the lesson in full!
