First Week of 2nd Grade Lesson Plans

Two weeks from the day that I am writing this blog post, I will be heading back to school. I’ve spent a decent amount of time this summer getting my room set up, and I felt good about walking away for a while after a few days of setting up.

But now, my brain has turned to: What in the world are these kids going to do when they show up in 2 weeks??

We are kind of starting from scratch this year. We are departmentalizing for the first time this year, and we can’t just rely on the same first week plan we’ve always done. If we all do the same activities every day, the kids will end up doing things twice as they switch classes.

So, we are looking for a fresh set of activities that we can do during that first week to add to what we already have! Which is exactly why I developed the First Week Back Activity Pack!

The First Week Back Activity Pack is exactly what it sounds like! It’s a pack of 12 activities that are perfectly designed for back to school time. These activities are hands-on and engaging, but they also have all kinds of mini-lessons about routines, procedures, community, and SEL embedded into them! If you’re armed with these on the first week of school, you will be able to cover dozens of routines and procedures, along with build a great community!

Some of my favorite activities are:

  • Reading Pencils on Strike and creating a pencil craft that includes student pledges to care for our classroom

  • Roll and Share discussion prompts for community building

  • Students design their own name tags with things they love and share why they put what they did on their name tags

  • Read a book about names (The Name Jar, Chrysanthemum, etc.) and play The Name Game

And so many more! These activities are perfect for helping your students form a year-long bond, have some fun. but also work in so many constructive conversations about expectations along the way!
