Strategy 1: Brilliant Beads/Box

The Brilliant Beads strategy takes student engagement and listening skills to the next level. Here’s how it works:

  • Get a special string of beads designated as the “Brilliant Beads.” (or a cute little box/basket and call it the ‘Brilliant Box’)

  • When a student shares a thoughtful or insightful response during class, they earn the beads for the rest of the lesson.

  • Their job? To listen to other responses and pass the beads to the next student who says something brilliant.

This strategy not only encourages focused listening but also keeps students motivated to participate thoughtfully. Plus, it’s a fun and tangible way to celebrate academic success!

Strategy 2: Mystery Prize

Blurting out during lessons can derail the flow of your classroom. The Mystery Prize strategy is a creative and engaging way to tackle this issue:

  • Choose an exciting prize but keep it a secret (think pajama day, extra recess, or a fun treat).

  • Each time the class gets through a lesson without blurting out, they earn a letter toward the mystery prize.

  • The catch? Hand out the letters out of order so students can’t easily guess the prize.

Once all letters are earned, students work together to unscramble them and reveal their reward. This strategy builds anticipation, teamwork, and self-control!

Strategy 3: Volume Changes

Sometimes, the secret to reducing chatter is to keep your students on their toes. Unpredictable volume changes can grab attention and keep students engaged:

  • Whisper parts of your directions to encourage students to quiet down and focus.

  • Follow it up with an exciting, louder tone to build enthusiasm about what’s next.

  • Alternate between quiet and energetic delivery to keep students engaged and eager to listen.

This strategy not only curbs unnecessary chatter but also adds an element of fun to your teaching style.
