Winter Reading, Writing, + A Snowflake Craft

Winter is here, and we’re all headed back to school. I’m going to be real…it’s hard for me to get jazzed about the January-February stretch of the school year. I have to really dig deep to come up with ways to create some magic and keep things from feeling stale with all of the germs, indoor recess, and gray skies.

Last year, this activity worked PERFECTLY in my classroom. This is how the lesson went:

Interactive read aloud of Snowflake Bentley.
Do a close of the book to pull out evidence of what we’re working on. (Last year it was main idea, but you can focus on several skills in this book!)
Students completed a biography writing about Wilson Bentley’s life and accomplishments. We mounted the writing on construction paper and hung on the wall along with our snowflakes. Check out the video below to see how I taught my students to make these snowflakes last year!

Cute, simple, unique…and perfect for winter! Plus, your room will look adorable all winter long, bringing a little more joy to the gray, cold days!

PS: In the video, I use scotch tape to assemble the snowflakes. This was just for ease of filming. Kids can use glue, or if you’re assembling one on your own, a hot glue gun will work just fine!
