Reading Guide for At Home Learning

In light of recent events, I wanted to share some easy links and ideas for at-home reading instruction that can be shared with your parents and families, or added into your distance learning lesson plans! Feel free to share this blog post in your parent newsletters, or download these guides and email them out, if you are doing any kind of online or distance learning in the coming weeks.

Over the course of this week, March 16-20, I will be sharing quick, easy-to-implement activity ideas for grades K-5 in a variety of content areas. I’m designing them for parents here in my area in mind. Our teachers have been given no directives to keep teaching as normal in any capacity (yet). But parents are in need of just a little bit of structure in their day, because they are trying to keep their own jobs going, too!

Today, I’m bringing you a free ‘reading guide’ for your families to reference. Each guide, for K-5, includes

  • Great reading behaviors to build stamina, create interest, and get kids reading more

  • A list of series great for that age

  • A list of authors great for that age

  • Before, during, and after reading questions that are developmentally appropriate

  • Links to places to find books, if the selection in the home is lacking-includes youtube channels that are teacher-tested and kid-approved, free online libraries, and podcasts or other websites that host great audible stories!

These guides are handy to give to parents who say, “We need to be reading more, but my child is bored with it.” Or, “Can you give me a list of places to find books online?”, or “Can you give me a list of authors to order on Amazon?” This guide is a great place to start, no matter the elementary grade level!

And stay tuned for more free activity guides over the next few days!
